Abstract Accounting wordt zowel in de praktijk als in het wetenschappelijk onderzoek vaak in een instrumenteel perspectief geplaatst. Dit artikel beargumenteert tegen de achtergrond van financiële schandalen en financiële crises dat er reden is om meer nadruk te leggen op een relationeel perspectief. Accounting wordt dan niet gezien als een instrument, maar als een actor of een mediator. Het krijgt zelf vorm in het netwerk waarin het actief is en het helpt om andere processen en identiteiten in het netwerk vorm te geven.
